Charles R. Athey '01 is an Associate Attorney at Rasin and Wootton, in Chestertown, Maryland. Prior to joining Rasin and Wootton, Charlie was with the law firm of Shapiro, Lifschitz and Schram, P.C., in Washington, DC, and the State's Attorney's Office for Baltimore County, Maryland. Charlie serves on the Board of Directors of Shared Opportunity Service, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization that oversees the operation of the Kent Family Center. Charlie graduated magna cum laude with an B.A. in Drama before attending the University of Baltimore School of Law. He has served Washington College as an admissions counselor, Assistant Director of Admissions, co-chair of the Washington, DC, Alumni Chapter and a member of the Alumni Alliance.
The closest Charlie Athey '01 came to the practice of law as an undergraduate was his role in the staged reading of Chicago. He played the part of Billy Flynn, Roxie's attorney.
"I took various political science and philosophy classes," he admits, "but it was my experience as a drama major—the literary and character analyses, the confidence that comes from stage performance, and the challenge of pulling together a production that prepared me for the study of law. There are similar challenges in preparing a case."
Charlie, who spent two years working as a law clerk in the State's Attorney's Office of Baltimore County, graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in May 2006. Charlie practiced complex commercial litigation for two years with a medium-sized law firm in Washington, DC, and is currently associated with Rasin & Wootton, in Chestertown, Maryland, where he handles real estate law, trusts and estates, probate, general business matters, and litigation. He is licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia and has clients in all three jurisdictions.
"The liberal arts requirements provide you with the personal freedom to challenge yourself in different ways and explore your own interests," he says.
